Some problems have arisen while defining and analysing sources of an autobiographical nature resulting from difficulties in translating terms from one language to another. Presser, , p. Historians of literature tend to understand this category as a literary genre which has its own boundaries and characteristic features.
Attempts to categorize historical sources as a literary genre are not always successful. In the case of France, livres de raison, correspond in one point only to the schema of an autobiography — in the identity of the writer and the narrator of a document3. In a dissertation by Ralf Wuthenow, examples of texts which differed from classic autobiographies were collected in a separate chapter and treated as special cases5.
Obviously, such a rigorous treatment of the definition of the literary genre led to depreciating sources which did not fit the schema.
